Nestle "Funner Menu Option"

“Funner Menu Option”

I always knew I loved the “Crunch” candy bar, and for a good reason. Nestle, back in 2009 created a “Funner Menu Option” when you called the company for customer service. This was quite the bold move, but I can also see how this could’ve accidently gotten a lot of attention. What was most likely just a fun add-on to contacting the customer service line to Nestle made them all the buzz in 2009. What I mainly noticed was how people that tried to listen to the “Funner Menu Option” had to call back multiple times before their call could even go through. Through my research I found lots of different pages that are like “Reddit”. Pages that allow people to share comments and have them compile in a ladder like page. Today, these pages are not as popular as other forms of social media, but back in 2009 these pages were all the rage. The amount of people that were exposed to the phone number was, most likely, huge. Most of the comments on the page noted that they couldn’t get through and that they would get a “busy line” notification. https://www.disboards.com/threads/omg-call-nestle-too-funny.2345572/ This sort of “back-up” reminds me of two things, when Instagram first went public, and what happens to companies after they are exposed on Shark Tank. The way this relates to Instagram was that when Instagram first went public it kept crashing because so many people were trying to get on it. This relates to how many people were trying to get on the hotline and listen to the funner option, it caused problems with Nestle and the customers that were actually trying to contact customer service. The same with the shark tank effect, once words get out about a cool and exciting new company, people want in. They start looking up the company and the company can either die because it can’t keep up, or it thrives with all the new business. https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/openforum/articles/the-shark-tank-effect-how-even-the-shows-losers-became-winners/  Nestle, being the giant company it is made sure that it thrived and it got a lot of people talking about them ultimately giving them better sales. I’m sure if Ellen posted her picture with a “Crunch” candy bar the company would’ve seen a certain percentage increase in sales with that candy bar.

  1. I also found a couple older website chat forums that talked about the menu. It was awesome to see all the conversations that started because of Nestle!
