God gets 10%, Why should you get 18%

Oh Pastor Bell, is 6 extra dollars to a 35 dollar meal really too much for Applebees to ask? I have heard that if you can’t afford to leave a tip than you shouldn’t go out for dinner.
Looking at it from a scholarly view it is not legal, in most states, to apply a mandatory tip to any meal. For example, here in Utah a mandatory tip is not legal. I know that whenever I go out to dinner I will not be charged a mandatory tip, but my wife once was a waitress and has explained to me the need of getting a good tip. In states where tips are not mandatory, but allowed to be given to employees, employees are payed $2.13 an hour. A low amount, but since they are allowed to accept tips both the hourly wage and tips must amount to the minimum wage of $7.25 and hour. If the minimum wage is not met than the owner of the establishment must compensate the employees to meet the minimum amount, you can read more about it here.
On a personal note I just want to say that I have never worked at an establishment where my pay relied on tips, therefore I don’t understand the need. I will say that there are two people at fault here, the waitress and the pastor. For one, the waitress shouldn’t make a big deal out of not getting a tip from a large party, I’m sure it wasn’t her first or last. From what I have read that happens a lot, large groups not willing to pay extra for the services they were provided. Plus we don’t even know how the waitress treated the party, she could’ve been terrible and then leaving no tip would’ve been justified. On the contrary, the pastor must be prepared to pay a tip, especially if he is treated well with great service. Overall you need to be a decent person because if word gets out that you did something wrong people will find out and your reputation could be ruined. Applebee’s just seems like a crappy place to be but hey it’s called work for a reason.

  2. It's hard to not be one-sided because we all personally know someone that has been a server. I agree with you that it's called work for a reason!
